A bit about David's life

Created by Susan 3 years ago

David grew up in Horbury, Yorkshire with his half brother Bob and half sister Muriel who is still with us.  At 16, he was apprenticed to the YEB and spent all his working life in the electricity industry with many happy memories of the places and the people he met and worked with.

David and Susan married in 1967 and moved to the northeast just before Amanda was born in 1969.  Susan thought it was for 18 months but they stayed 40 years! Andrew was born in 1972.  David threw himself into being a great dad, always active in their upbringing.  Amanda now fondly remembers the many walks which weren't so appreciated at the time - "not another hill!" "we're not going walking again are we?" She did, however, very much appreciate the 10 hour overnight drives to Devon and Cornwall for our summer holidays and the fun they had in the sea with the dinghy.

Andrew joined the army in 1997 and thoroughly enjoyed the army life and the outdoors. He became a Major in the Royal Artillery and was about to return to command the battery at Albermarle barracks in February 2006 when sadly he went missing whilst walking in the Cairngorms at the end of January 2006.  Despite extensive searching by the army and the Mountain Rescue services, no trace has been found of him to this day. A week after this, David became a grandad for the first time which helped ease the sorrow of losing Andrew.  Twenty months after Jack was born, along came Kate so Susan and David made the decision to move closer to the family and moved down to Knowle in 2008.

Since moving to Knowle, David and Susan have thrown themselves into the local community with church, bowls, the family and walking always being a focus. Some of his last words were, "I have no regrets."
